On the Chern-Simons topological term at finite temperature
The parity-violating topological term in the effective action for 2+1 massive
fermions is computed at finite temperature in the presence of a constant
background field strength tensor. Gauge invariance of the finite-temperature
effective action is also discussed.Comment: 8 pages, standard LaTe
Design, simulation and analysis of a parallel hybrid electric propulsion system for unmanned aerial vehicles
Aerial Vehicles (UAV) has become a significant growing segment of the global aviation industry. These vehicles are developed with the intention of operating in regions where the presence of onboard human pilots is either too risky or unnecessary. Their popularity with both the military and civilian sectors have seen the use of UAVs in a diverse range of applications, from reconnaissance and surveillance tasks for the military, to civilian uses such as aid relief and monitoring tasks. Efficient energy utilisation on an UAV is essential to its functioning, often to achieve the operational goals of range, endurance and other specific mission requirements. Due to the limitations of the space available and the mass budget on the UAV, it is often a delicate balance between the onboard energy available (i.e. fuel) and achieving the operational goals. This paper presents the development of a parallel Hybrid Electric Propulsion System (HEPS) on a small fixed-wing UAV incorporating an Ideal Operating Line (IOL) control strategy. A simulation model of an UAV was developed in the MATLAB Simulink environment, utilising the AeroSim Blockset and the in-built Aerosonde UAV block and its parameters. An IOL analysis of an Aerosonde engine was performed, and the most efficient (i.e. provides greatest torque output at the least fuel consumption) points of operation for this engine were determined. Simulation models of the components in a HEPS were designed and constructed in the MATLAB Simulink environment. It was demonstrated through simulation that an UAV with the current HEPS configuration was capable of achieving a fuel saving of 6.5%, compared to the ICE-only configuration. These components form the basis for the development of a complete simulation model of a Hybrid-Electric UAV (HEUAV)
Adaptive dynamic path re-planning RRT algorithms with game theory for UAVs
The main aim of this paper is to describe an adaptive re-planning algorithm based on a RRT and Game Theory to produce an efficient collision free obstacle adaptive Mission Path Planner for Search and Rescue (SAR) missions. This will provide UAV autopilots and flight computers with the capability to autonomously avoid static obstacles and No Fly Zones (NFZs) through dynamic adaptive path replanning. The methods and algorithms produce optimal collision free paths and can be integrated on a decision aid tool and UAV autopilots
Maximally restrictive leptonic texture zeros in two-Higgs-doublet models
The implementation of maximally restrictive texture zeros in the leptonic
sector is investigated in the context of two-Higgs-doublet models with Majorana
neutrinos. After analyzing all maximally restrictive pairs of leptonic mass
matrices with zero entries, we conclude that there are only four texture
combinations that are compatible with observations at 3 sigma confidence level
and can be implemented through Abelian symmetries in a two-Higgs-doublet model.
The compatibility of these textures with current constraints on
lepton-flavor-violating processes is also studied. The ultraviolet completion
of these models is discussed in the framework of the seesaw mechanism for
neutrino masses.Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, 5 tables; comments and references added, final

Abelian realization of phenomenological two-zero neutrino textures
In an attempt at explaining the observed neutrino mass-squared differences
and leptonic mixing, lepton mass matrices with zero textures have been widely
studied. In the weak basis where the charged lepton mass matrix is diagonal,
various neutrino mass matrices with two zeros have been shown to be consistent
with the current experimental data. Using the canonical and Smith normal form
methods, we construct the minimal Abelian symmetry realizations of these
phenomenological two-zero neutrino textures. The implementation of these
symmetries in the context of the seesaw mechanism for Majorana neutrino masses
is also discussed.Comment: 11 pages; references added, version to appear in Nuclear Physics

Minimal string-scale unification of gauge couplings
We look for the minimal particle content which is necessary to add to the
standard model in order to have a complete unification of gauge couplings and
gravity at the weakly coupled heterotic string scale. Using the current
precision electroweak data, we find that the presence of a vector-like fermion
at an intermediate scale and a non-standard hypercharge normalization are in
general sufficient to achieve this goal at two-loop level. If one requires the
extra matter scale to be below the TeV scale, then it is found that the
addition of three vector-like fermion doublets with a mass around 700 GeV
yields a perfect string-scale unification, provided that the affine levels are
kY=13/3, k2=1 and k3=2, as in the SU(5) X SU(5) string-GUT. Furthermore, if
supersymmetry is broken at the unification scale, the Higgs mass is predicted
in the range 125 GeV - 170 GeV, depending on the precise values of the top
quark mass and tan(beta) parameter.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures, references updated and comments added, final

On transfer operators for continued fractions with restricted digits
For any non-empty subset I of the natural numbers, let {Lambda}I denote those numbers in the unit interval whose continued fraction digits all lie in I. Define the corresponding transfer operator
Formula.
for Formula, where Re (rß) = {theta}I is the abscissa of convergence of the series Formula.
When acting on a certain Hilbert space HI, rß, we show that the operator LI, rß is conjugate to an integral operator KI, rß. If furthermore rß is real, then KI, rß is selfadjoint, so that LI, rß : HI, rß -> HI, rß has purely real spectrum. It is proved that LI, rß also has purely real spectrum when acting on various Hilbert or Banach spaces of holomorphic functions, on the nuclear space C{omega} [0, 1], and on the Fréchet space C{infty} [0, 1].
The analytic properties of the map rß ↦ LI, rß are investigated. For certain alphabets I of an arithmetic nature (for example, I = primes, I = squares, I an arithmetic progression, I the set of sums of two squares it is shown that rß ↦ LI, rß admits an analytic continuation beyond the half-plane Re rß > {theta}I
